Drinks editor Jonathan Ray has yet more treats for wine-loving subscribers this summer. South Africa is our destination, via Old Queen Street, as we explore the wines of three of the country’s greatest estates. No need to be shy – these friendly events are aimed at the enthusiastic amateur.
Anthony Hamilton Russell and his wines really do need no introduction to readers – he’s hosted more Spectator Winemaker Lunches than any other producer: six at the last count, plus one dinner. We adore AHR at Spectator Towers and could not have been happier (nor less surprised) when the estate was honoured with the 2025 Platter’s Editor’s Award, Winery of the Year, in this, its 50th anniversary year. Anthony – who is sure to be his usual elegant, urbane, articulate and provocative self – will show several back vintages of his remarkable Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, along with an aperitif of his jaw-droppingly fine Ashbourne Sandstone.
